you know, mario was on arcades and even atari (and several atari handhelds) before he was on nintendo

regardless, as much as i like link, mario has *become* the most popular, well-known character out of all nintendo games.
as a result, a good way to get a game to sell is to base it on a familiar character that everyone loves. that's why there are so many mario games. tennis, party, rpg, you name it. mario's done it.

Of couse it should be Mario because he's the most recognized video game character. Mario and Donkey Kong pretty much made Nintendo. The only reason Mario got to be the mascot is because he's the hero in the Donkey Kong games, and DK was the villain.
The problem with Link being the Mascot is that Link is never the same person twice in the Zelda games. With each new Zelda game, a new Link is the hero.

While Link is great, Mario came first. The Mario games are also a bit more popular, so it makes sense for him to be seen by everyone. Someone who's never played on any Nintendo system still knows who he is, while some may actually think Link is "Zelda" based on the game titles.

Mario was the first Nintendo character and the most used character in Nintendo. Of course he should.

Love Mario and each and all the Mario characters. and Mario isnt their basically Mascot. they have link and Zelda too. and that i dont think of he will ever be overused. his game form works and is often relaxing. And he's versitile. He has been in a large form of genres. from activities video games to a pair tremendously kick-*** RPGs.

Link is too serious and has too much self-respect. Can you imagine him dressing up for Nintendo events? Could you see Link in a soccer kit or a racoon outfit? He would never do it!
