NOT the Romans! They could NEVER have invaded England as it did not exist then!!! (the Romans invaded Britain!)
England was founded by Germanic tribesmen (Angles, Saxons and Jutes -as well as remnant local British) who came when the Romans left Britain so they could hardly be said to have invaded the country they created!
England as we know it was formed from Wessex and Mercia by Alfred the great to stop the Vikings although England did end up with a Viking King (Cnute) so that would be one. Then we have the Normans who were realy just Vikings on horses who had settled in France. There are no other permanent successful invasions though the French, Spanish and Germans (Even the Scots had a go a few times!) have all tried at various times. So that only gives us 2!!!

PLEASE NOTE***** THE ROMANS NEVER INVADED ENGLAND!!!***** This would be impossible!

-If you ask who invaded the geographical area that we call England today - well THAT is a whole lot more complex and goes back to neolithic times and includes, Beaker people, Celtic tribesmen, Romans, Irish tribes, Caledonian and Pictish peoples, various Germanic tribes etc......

I'll bet your teacher or whoever asked this question ment Romans,Vikings and Normans though - this is a wrong question.

Note to those answering this question - read the question! It says ENGLAND NOT Britain!
Oh and "rdenig_male" - you will hang like all Jacobite rebels ;) LOL!!!!! hehehehe

I don't remember "3" great invasions being constantly mentioned together throught history.

Obviously there was the great Roman invasion, of I believe the first century. Then there was the Norman conquest of the Anglo-Saxons in 1066.

But there were numerous Viking invasions for several hundred years after the fall of Rome until the first real King of England, King Alfred, unified the country in the 9th century. I just can't think of "1" Viking invasion that was greater than all the rest.

I know the Scotts, under both William Wallace / Robert the Bruce and a few hundred years later under Mary Queen of Scotts, both won huge, bloody battles against English forces near the English/Scottish boarder. But neither can really be called invasions.

In 43Ad was the main invasion by the Romans, though there were attempts to invade prior to this year. In 410 the Romans, left the Romano-British to defend themselves. The Anglo-Saxon invasion is surrounded by myths and legends, but basically it is believed to have occurred sometime around 495 with the battle of Mount Badon. It isn't really called an invasion but a migration. 793 is the date given for the first attacks of the vikings, perhaps the viking attacks could be considered an invasion, because they did settle in Britain.
However, it was in 1066 on October 14th, that the Normans invaded England, it was the last successful invasion. With William the conqueror taking the throne, that was promised to him and was stolen by Harold (who was shot in the eye during battle).

First was the Roman invasion -55 BC
Second was the Viking invasion - 688 to 801AD (this sparked a long drawn out war between Anglo-saxon kingdoms and the Viking's and resulted in numerous ongoing invasions until the Vikings secured the Crown under Cnute)
Third was the Norman invasion -1066AD

However in the period from the Fall of Rome to the Viking invasion there were numerous Saxon invasions and wars between Anglo controlled areas and saxons controlled areas.

The one everyone forgets is the invasion by William of Orange in 1687 - because the English ruling classes connived at it and pretended it wasn't an invasion. But it overthrew the legitimate king. History then pretended it didn't happen.

The Latins, The Norsemen (who were angles, danes, vikings AND Normans), and Ourselves or the original population of tribal Britons. We are called Celts at times as this name was denoted after a linguistic archaeological discovery made in the 18th C to do with Gaul. Anyway, we came from Armenia according to chronicle of King Alfred. I could be right, I could be wrong, but this is what I think.
