You do not need one this year for travel other than by plane.

Travelers entering Mexico for purposes other than tourism or business or for stays of longer than 180 days require a visa and must carry a valid U.S. passport.

U.S. citizens planning to work or live in Mexico should apply for the appropriate Mexican visa at the Embassy of Mexico

Chiprat is correct in everything except the 'grease money'. No bribes will be necessary or taken by Immigration. Times are changing my friend! I've been living here in Mexico for 4 years. I have never had a "difficult" time getting a work permit. I'm an English teacher. Work at a beach resort? What are you going to do there? You have two choices of employment in this country, only two. English teacher, or opening your own business. The second takes probably 6 months to a year to set up. The first a couple of months, and as the others stated, you must have a work sponsor. The idea is that you can't come down here and start working as a bartender or whatever. You would be stealing a job from a native in a country which has a high unemployment rate. You would probably be reported and deported by a pissed off bartender. You COULD come down here and teach English without a work visa and probably wouldn't get caught, however, with no teaching experience/skills you wouldn't make very much. Come on down, relax and enjoy, scout a city you wanna live in and do it the right way. That's my advice. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. I've lived here for 4 years now. I'm from Chicago.

No, provided that you plan to travel by land and return before next year when all Americans will need passports to travel to Mexico. Although, as of January 2007, all Americans traveling in or out of Mexico (and Canada) by air require a passport. Typically to work in foreign countries, you also need a visa.

To work legally in Mexico you need your passport and original birth certificate and it helps to have a marriage certificate if you are married to a Mexican national, then you need to obtain the certificates of legalization of the company you will be working for and proof of payment from that company to the Hacienda de Mexico (proof of tax payments). This company and yourself will be investigated before your able to obtain an FM3 or as you call it a work visa.
Good luck and it helps to have some grease money.
