According to Dr. John Gray, author of Men are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, due to biology, hormones, brain make up and societal conditioning men and women think and act differently. For example, women talk more than men (24,000 words per day versus 7,000 words per day) and get annoyed when men don't seem to want to speak to them, and men get annoyed because they think women talk to much.

Also, to be in a successful relationship, each person should understand the other person and accept them as they are. The book also contained strategies that men and women could each use to understand and get along better with their partners.

I found the book very helpful in understanding my husband, brothers and sons.

We need to learn to listen and actually try to understand each other and "where we are coming from."
Men and women see things differently, speak differently, think differently. Men mainly live through the analytical side of their brain, while women mainly live through the emotional/artistic side of their brain.
Women assume that men are unemotional beasts who only want one thing, while men feel that women aren't logical enough and too emotional.
It takes work for a good relationship to become stable, with both of the partners working to understand the other.

Tenets.

Tenants are the occupants of a dwelling.

The basic tenets are that men and women are really very different animals. While people are "essentially the same" as a whole, there are still very distinct differences in people based on their gender.

Mars is the god of war, Venus the goddess of love-- the planets are named for them.

Men are seen as warlike and Venus as loving... Draw your own conclusions.

Men and women approach the same event or problem from a gender-specific perspective with gender-specific tools.

I could not reconcile my love of elegant writing with Gray's awkward and extensive use of the mythic archetypes. It was a chore for me to read, because I kept rolling my eyes. You can't please everyone.
