Go to Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace or anywhere with a home improvement department and buy a new door knob set that comes with keys. Then follow the directions closely and take out the old doorknob and put in your new one. Save the old one to put back in the door if you move so you can take your locking one with you. It is easy to change yourself if you follow the directions. I have lots of experience with guys always getting it wrong because they can't be bothered to read and actually follow the directions.

What you will be looking for in an entry door knob. (These are typically placed on the front door of a house) The below link will show you and example....

The current knob should be removed with just a screwdriver.
The holes are standard.
The new knob should also install with just a screwdriver.

This is an easy home improvement project and should take less then half an hour.

Remember to save the orginal hardware to swap out when you move. Most landlords prefer the "hole lock" style for interior doors. (These can be unlocked from the outside with a thin rod like the inside of an ink pen.)

You should expect to spend at least $30 on the new knob however this is a small price to pay to prevent theft!

Good luck!

this is a very easy fix, just go to your local hardware store Home Depot, Lows and pick a new knob with a keyed entry and take out the regular knob on your door and install the keyed entry knob on your bedroom door. so when you leave lock it like you would your front door, now the only way in is with the key that you hold.

I'm a late comer but did you buy the right lock? Hope you bought a door knob lock and not a dead bolt...... Because you should not have to drill another hole if you bought the right one.....if you didn't return it and get the right one, you have to ask somebody were you by it. You can get a cheap one at wal-mart for around $10.00 Just remove the old one and put the new one in.........
