Kindergarten is the most rewarding and most exhausting grade I have ever taught. The kids are so into everything you do. If you start a new center they are SO excited. They love learning but you have to be an entertainer. Their attention spans are so short that you have to be very concise. You must be a drama queen! You need eyes in the back of your head, and a heart the size of North America. When you are grumpy, they will tell you that your hair is pretty, and that they like your shoes. They will sneeze on you and pick their noses and want to hold your hand. And you'll want to, because they are so darn cute, especially with the incredulous way they view the world. They make me laugh everyday!

I would say if you really think you want to be a kindergarten, the best way to find out is to go hang out in some kindergarten classes. Spending your entire day with little kids is very different from most jobs, but I don't think I could do anything more important with my time.

As a final note, Kindergarten parents are the toughest creatures in the Parental Kingdom. They often require lots of nurturing and instruction. They are also the most grateful when their child has been successful.

Good luck with your career!

Pros - very rewarding, many days off in the summer, different experience every day, feel like you are accomplishing something, kids are usually very loving at that age, not as much prep time required as older grade levels

Cons - very demanding, can only take vacations in the summer or winter/spring break, can be frustrating, can be overwhelming, may leave you drained and exhausted some days, may end up spending a lot of money out of pocket

Ability to make a difference in this tired old world ~~~ providing you really care.
High salary, multiple days off including 2 month summer vacation to travel, life time health care benefit, retirement benefit, et al. Kindergarten ~~~ no homework to correct.

Plan on buying a lot of your own supplies and emotional strength to put up with "baloney" politics ~~~ the school system is loaded with selfish, ignorant "Wan-ta-be-something-else but settled for school system pay check" teachers and administrators.
