A friend of mine told me that she has a friend who is adopting a baby and getting ready to breast feed it. She said that she is manipulating her breasts somehow - to get the milk to come. Is this absolute craziness? Has anybody ever heard of anything like this?

If you can note sources or webpages that discuss this - that would be great!

There are very rare cases where women (and believe it or not, the occasional man) have been able to do it. However, pregnancy creates milk that is specially designed for the baby you are carrying. While I'm sure any breast milk is great, I don't think it would have quite the same benefits for an adopted child.

If a mother wants to simulate breastfeeding, there are backpacks you can get that allow you to hold the baby in a similar position as you would while breastfeeding - the baby is fed through this contraption.

Anyway here are some sites that adoptive breastfeeding it:

Wet nurses have been around since ancient times. There is no need for hormones, as through frequent stimulation of the areola and nipples, a woman can begin lactating even though they have never given birth.

In ancient times, wet nurses were more common and helped in situations where the mother died in childbirth or was too ill to nurse her own child. Also if they had multiple births and could not produce enough milk on their own, wet nurses were called upon for help.

Hope this helps.

I read about it in "What to Expect The First Year" It gives info on what a woman can do to stimulate lactation for breastfeeding an adopted child.

I saw a snap shot the other day that a female dog was breast feeding some kittens that were left mom less once, not to long ago actually, so I supposed is the maternal instinct what's turn on or something but it may be possible.

YES! there are hormones that can be taken to assist in the process as well.
Many adopting mothers have been able to breastfeed, however not always able to produce enough milk on their own.

Yes it is possible, there are drugs you can take to induce lactation and also you can pump for a long time and your breasts will start to produce milk.

I have heard that women can produce milk by taking a certain hormone but I don't know much else about it!

You can take a hormone, prescribed by your doctor, to make the milk come in, but I don't think manipulating will help any.
