My last period was on dec 23rd and I got pregnant (ttc 8m) and the miscarried on fed 2nd ( 6 weeks) My doctor said that she wanted me to get my progestorone checked one week after ovulation. I started charting again and taking opk tests. I ovulated on feb 25th 100% positve. This sunday I got my blood test like I was supposed to. Then yesterday I got my period which gave my a 9 day luteal phase. I know that they are supposed to be longer then that. Anyway I called her to get the results (13) and told her about my 9 day luteal phase. She was like you took the test at the wrong time you should of took it on the 23 of feb b/c that is 3 weeks after a 28 day cycle. I tried to explain to her that I did not have a 28 day cycle and that I had ovulated on day 23. She acted like I was crazy and said I must take the test on day 21 next month no questions asked. I have decided that I want to use a new doctor. Does anyone know of a good ob/gyn in baltimore MD? Also, has anyone taken b6 or progest?

I have a short luteal phase (by the way, I HATE the term "luteal phase defect", it sounds like an accusation, I much prefer "short luteal phase.")

Low progesterone can cause a short luteal phase. If you are charting your BBT, you would notice low post ovulatory temperatures and often erractic temps that may dip below coverline. Natural progesterone creams can be used in the case of low progesterone. You should be fairly sure that low progesterone is your issue though as NPC can have a negative effect on your cycle too.

A B-vitamin deficiency can also cause an SLP. Even if you are otherwise well nourished, you can still have a B-vit deficiency. If you have an SLP and do not think progesterone is the cause, you might try a trial of B vitamins for your whole cycle. You'd want to take a B-complex vitamin daily from the start of your period on. It can sometimes take a cycle or 2 to normalize your LP, though you might see results after the first cycle. You would want to monitor your cervical fluid too b/c sometimes it seems like B-vits can decrease it slightly. More water or drinking green tea daily can bring it back up if it decreases too much.

When I was TTC #2, I was plagued by an SLP. I tried B-vits just postovulatory for several cycles w/o success. Once I tried them for the whole cycle, I conceived right away! I am not TTC #3 yet, but I am using B-vits to normalize my cycle anyway. Clearly, if they work on my cycle, I must be deficient and that can't be good for my over all health.

If neither of these remedies help, you might investigate other natural means of extending your LP. These are only the ones I personally know about. You might check out Nutrition, Cyles, and Fertility by M. Shannon.

Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility

Find a different doctor. I am just starting to learn about the luteal phase (I am reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler right now), but my first instinct is to find someone who will listen to you and work with you. I also know this from other health issues as well.

Definitely go to a different doctor. The 21 day prog. test will say that you didn't ovulate (of course) if you don't ovulate until day 23. I don't have a LP defect, but on the babyzone.com message board there are many women who experience this. Maybe you should check those TTC message boards out...

Good luck!
