I'm 15 years old, and just a few days ago I noticed a change in my vaginal discharge. It is usually normal, but it recently changed to very thick, and yellow-ish, with a strange smell (I can't describe it). It started Tuesday with small pains in my vaginal area, and then the discharge was different (also, I've been very tired lately...I dont think that's relevant, but in case it is.). I'm not sexually active, so it couldn't be an STD, Im pretty sure. Also, this has never happened before, so I'm not sure what this could be, or what to do. Any ideas on what could be causing this sudden change, or when/how I can get it back to normal?

I'd like to add a few things...the odor, if it had to be described, is almost like...peanut butter, or something. It's not fishy, just flax-y. The discharge is also thick...sorta like ear-wax, almost. Also, I started noticing it after a few weeks of using this antibacterial apple-scented soap...could that be causing a reaction? Also, I was thinking of just waiting for about a week to see if it disappears on it's own...is that wise?

Could be a yeast infection. My daughter can't use bubble bath, or anything like that or she will get a yeast infection. You may need to stay away from the new bath soap. If it continues after you stop using the soap, discuss it with your mom or your Dr. You may want to see about picking up some Monistat, or some other anti fungal.

I have never heard of one so young having a discharge, just a normal period. Don't use the soap, try dial as that is what my doctor recommended years ago. If you have taken any antibiotics you could have a yeast infection. I would change soaps & if that didn't work I would go to the Dr. You never know when something is seriously wrong. I am not trying to scare you, but it is better to be safe than sorry.Hope u get better.

It sounds as though you have a yeast infection. You don't have to be sexually active to get one. These things occur from time to time because the environment in the vagina has changed. Yeast like to live in very hot and moist environments so to avoid this it is advisable to wear cotton panties and loose wearing pants and skirts. Try to avoid wearing black panties and black pants (unless it is necessary). Some foods also cause yeast infections especially foods high in sugars for example, chocolates. Stress is another cause for yeast infections especially if you are nervous about an upcoming exam or event. To treat a yeast infection it is best to go to a doctor who can prescribe the best treatment for you. Most doctors prescribe tablets which can be taken orally (which is best because you want to treat the infection from the inside of your body to the outside) but if you prefer you can purchase an over the counter cream or ovules. Remember if you use the creams to discard the applicator afterwards or (if it comes with one applicator) thoroughly wash it in warm, sudsy water. Remember, if you have a tingling or itching sensation, DO NOT SCRATCH or you will damage your libia majora (large lips of the vagina).
