what is the point in having contracts in the nfl. it seems to me a team can cut you at any time and not pay you the remaining amount. i guess this joey porter thing is confusing. he has a year left gets cut, gets picked up and signs for more. im sure he will be cut again before this contracts up beacuse his performance will decline with age. so if he wasnt picked do the steelers pay? and even though he had a year left in pitt. every 1 says he was gonna holdout any ways. how does pay work then. like i said why even have a contract. the only kind that makes sense is a 1 year contract. this probably requires a long answer so just answer a small part if u dont wanna type alot. maybe i can get answers by committee.

Well, even the players know that they will never see a back-end of a deal. Thats why(not in the past) you here the phrase "Guaranteed Money", IF that amount is high a player will sign, for example Nate Clements signed a 8year 80 mill contract. However if he makes the roster next year (08-09 season) the final year of the contract (supposedly worth 16 mill) get voided, But in the first three years, he makes 22 mill, guaranteed. So in short, players look for guaranteed money now-a-days. And NFL teams have to pay that, even if a player gets cut. And players do get paid even if they are not in the league anymore..Scott Gragg is still getting paid 3 mil sitting at home by the niners

This is a hard question because contracts in the NFL are different with each player.....If a player is cut before the end of his contract most players have a clause stating that they must be paid at least a fraction of the amount he was going to earn that season....If a player is traded the team he was traded to takes over the contract and must either honor that contract or get a new deal. If a player is holding out he is getting paid nothing he most show up for practice and games in order to receive a pay check.....players hold out for 1 reason and 1 reason only MONEY they are unhappy with there current contract and either want to get a new contract or be traded away.....alot of players hold out when they get the franchise tag placed on them this is because the franchise tag is only a 1 year contract and good players want the security of a long contract that way if there performance goes down there money doesn't

The reason they have contracts is to lock players in so they can have them for a certain amount of years. The reason they cut Joey Porter is not because of how he was performing on the field. He was doing fine he just didn't like the Steelers organization. Also as you get older you sign contracts less years than a young guy. Joey Porter is locked in for 5 years and that is just about how much he should sign. Also the Dolphins need a guy like him the Steelers didn't need him as much. The Dolphins are looking to rebuild the team so they need him. Not only is he good he is a veteran so he can mentor the young players and possible future stars.

It's because the NFL players union has the worst deal for it's players in all of the professional sports. The contracts are not guarenteed like in the NBA and MLB and even the pension plans for the retired players are horrible. Also they only get health insurance for 5 years after they retire while NBA and MLB players have insurance for life even though everyone knows football players have the most injuries and some can barely walk when they get older. The president of the NFL players union is Gene Upshaw who is getting paid by both the players and the NFL to sit around on his lazy azz. It really does make me sick considering that out of all the sports football is the most brutal and these guys actually might deserve all those millions of dollars unlike in the NBA and MLB.

The team still honors the remaining guaranteed money on the contract when the player gets cut. Many of these players have money left to earn, get traded (contract is still valid) then extend/redo the money with a new contract so the salary cap hit is less for the new franchise.
