My Mom said that it is... How soon did you buy stuff b/f the baby was born ? I'm thinking of waiting til I'm 7 or 8 mos cuz that's not too early. Did any of you buy way too much stuff cuz you started buying things early ? I think that tends to happen also.

I am not superstitious!

However, I do believe in buying as LITTLE as possible for baby before s/he is born.

I worried about buying a crib before my daughter was born. We ended up cosleeping and never regretted not "buying a crib in time." In fact, we were glad we didn't waste a lot of money on one as they are pretty expensive. Before my son was born, we bought an Arm's Reach Cosleeper and it was most useful!

We didn't buy a changing table either and always changed her on the floor, couch, bed, wherever. For my son, we were given a changing pad and covers and converted our laundry room counter to a changing station. Worked like a charm for us and was super low cost.

With our daughter, we bought and were given some diapers. Those were very helpful, later on we switched to cloth and purchased the setup for that. For my son, we purchased additional cloth diapers in the infant size b/c we planned to CD right away.

I didn't buy a pump or bottles b/c I planned to breastfeed. We bought an inexpensive manual breastpump, a couple of bottles, and a pacie a little later on. As it turned out, my daughter refused all artificial nipples, so I breastfed exclusively and ecologically (and I'm so glad I did!). When my son cam along, I knew I wouldn't even bother w/ bottles or pacies.

We did get some onesies, sleepers and socks. I prefer gender neutral clothes b/c it's not always possible to know 100% the gender before baby is born and many couples prefer a surprise.

I bought 1 soft, stretchy bra to hold me over 'til I could get nursing bras. It was good I did b/c my cup size went up a cup or more and my band size went down after birth.

I definitely understand the excitement of wanting to buy things right away. I had to fight that temptation a great deal while pg w/ both my kids. I was always glad I didn't buy too much before birth though. Some things just aren't useful to YOU and what one mom thinks is a MUST might do nothing for your family (we had no use for bouncy chairs, swings, play pens, etc. I feel it's better to wait and see what you really need (other than the rock bottom basics) as you go rather than waste. Besides, your friends and family are likely to buy you many gifts of varying usefulness after baby is born.

Used to be the old folks said it was tempting the fates to put together a nursery before the 7 or 8 month mark. By then they felt chances were the pregnancy would be successful. Unfortunately I come from a WHOLE dang gum bunch of them old folks so I didn't do anything til 8th month. Now a days, the women are preparing nurseries long before that time. I think it's kinda cool to at least wait til you know the sex of the baby. Then you can customize the room for your child. My niece and her husband are in their early 30's and still "discussing" children, but she has several HUGE boxes of baby things tucked away just in case. Depends on how you feel. I'm mom to 3.

You can start furnishing the room, in the 7th or 8th month. And you can buy clothes and stuff too. But remember when buying clothes......
1) you will be getting a lot of stuff at baby showers. You can register at places as well.
2) babies grow fast. Newborn sizes will only last them a few weeks or a couple of months before they can't wear them anymore. Start buying stuff in larger sizes, calculating how old they will be during certain seasons of the year. Example: If you had a baby born today, he would be 3 months old in the summer, so cooler clothing would be in 3 - 6 month sizes. He would be 9 months old around Christmas so warmer stuff would need to be 9 -12 months.
You can safely lay in all the basics such as diapers, bottles, blankets and bedding, jel filled teething rings, little bowl and spoon sets, etc.
Target and WalMart are good places to shop for babies. Babies R Us great prices, too.

Have a baby shower before you buy anything!!! I received so much at my baby shower and had already bought so much myself. My baby couldn't even wear half of the clothes that he received.

On another note. If you are purchasing items yourself you should wait until the 2nd or 3rd trimester. When you are less likely to have complications. With my first pregnancy I was so excited. As soon as I found out I started decorating a nursery. At 3 months I found out it was a molar pregnancy and it was aborted. I don't want to sound negative, but things can happen. When you have bought items for a baby and end up having a miscarriage it is really hard seeing all of the items and getting rid of them.

It is never to early to start buying. But I wouldn't go out and buy all pink stuff or all blue stuff until I found out for sure and that still isn't a sure thing you will have a boy just because the doctor tells you!
If you start buying now I would buy stuff you know you will need. Blankets, sleepers, body wash, lotion, and anything like that you can always use and you can use on a boy or girl. As for diapers I wanted until mine was born because my first child I bought huggies and she could not wear them so we've used pampers on both my children so you never really know if your child will be able to use a certain type of diapers either. And if you are ready to start buying clothes and you aren't sure what your going to have you can always buy multicolor colors I did that with my second one.. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I went out buying stuff but it could be used for a boy or girl! Hope this helps and best wishes!

Not at all As a matter of fact, you may not want to wait that long. What will you do if the baby decides to come early?? We did wait until 5-6 months so we could decorate the baby's room. Our family also wanted to start buying right away. Find a Toys R Us (or other store) nearby and register early. It will help you keep track of what has been bought and what you will still need closer to your delivery date. Good luck!

I dont buy anything until the week before its due, and then I limit what I get. I have had 5 miscarriages , and a set of twins lost at a preemie- birth. So for me its just something I cant handle if things dont go as planned. I'm a mom of 2 living children, and 1 on the way. I'm 20 weeks and haven't got anything yet.

With the first one I waited till I was 3 months along and only bought neccities(sp?) with the 2nd one I bought stuff 1 week after I found out I was pg, 3rd one I waited till I knew what I was having, 4th one didnt need to buy anything had alot left over from his first 2 brothers.. =)

When you feel comfratable to buy stuff go ahead, there is no time limit on it.... Just buy stuff you know you will really need. And see what you get from the baby shower and if you want or need extra of something buy it..

We just started buy things and we are 25 weeks.
I do know some people who believe this (my friend who is due in April). But honestly, I don't want to run the risk of having to go out shopping with a new baby...anyway if something is going to happen, it's going to happen. You don't make things happen by buying baby clothes!

It is so exciting to be pregnant, how can you keep from giving in to that nesting instinct? Don't let anyone scare you. Be happy and confident and do what you want to do for the baby. Like you said, expect the unexpected! My doc told me to expect my baby's weight to be about 5 lbs, and my precious cargo weighed in at 9 pounds! So I had a bunch of teenie tiny stuff and had to get size 12 and 18 months to fit my baby. That's OK because it was a good surprise and a lot of fun. So go for it!!
