There is a very large commercial van belonging to a window company, which is being parked on the road right outside my house every evening and all weekend and this has been happening for the last few months now. They are definitely not carrying out any work at the other houses in my road and obviously, for whatever reason, the driver is unable to park it at his own house, which I assume is nearby, but we've never actually seen him. Not only does it look incredibly ugly right in front of our house, but it obstructs my view when I reverse down our drive to go to work and makes moving the car very difficult. We have even tried ringing the company number written on the van but it is on answerphone all day and they never respond to our messages. What are our rights here and how should we go about getting the company to move the van? Any advice would be great as we're just not sure where we stand.

It really depends on where you live. In Ohio where I have worked for governnment, local communites can have laws that determine what can and can not park in certain areas and for how long. It depends thus on the law of the state and local government where you live on who regulates this. Call your community's government city hall to see what they have on the books.

if its under 3.5 tonnes gross weight unladen there isnt any restriction on it being in a residential street. If it keeps causing a problem just get some adhesive label sheets and print them with 'excuse me your van is causing a problem parking here' then stick them all over the windscreen. That might work. Failing that, you could call up the company number and say you want an estimate for work or a window replacing. When they call you back tackle the real issue with them

Well, I think both of the answers so far are right. I'd like to add that if the van is indeed very large, it may exceed the weight limit allowable on a residential street. This is set by city ordinance. But do check about ordinances regarding parking on residential rights of way. It may not be allowed. City charters are usually available on line these days.

have you tried stuffing a very large potato up its exhaust pipe, make sure it goes so far up that the owner can't see it, try a couple. When the driver tries to start the van in the morning take a day off work and watch what happens, it will be hilarious guaranteed.

Yes as long as it is not parked illegally. But you could ring the company and politely request he park it somewhere else. I tmay be that the company have tools etc inside and would prefer it to beparked more securely anyway.

If its not parking on yellow lines or residents only parking and is on the space quite legally, i.e. is fully taxed and roadworthy and is not breaking any law, then yes, it can park there. The roads are public and even though it's a commercial vehicle, if its there and is legal, thats it...

No it's not illegal. Why don't you just politely ask him not to leave his car there.

You could also check the tax disc in the van to see if it's in date....if not report to the DVLA and they'll prob find some way of getting it removed.

If you are in the UK, you need to get on to your local council - and your local SNT (police) team. It does depend on the size of the van - if its a juggernaut they will definately take action!
