I'm a gay male and still a virgin. I am able to masturbate successfully and I become aroused when around attractive men. When I start being passionate with a guy I am fully stimulated. But from there I just sort of deflate. I can't keep it up! It's embarassing! And what's worse is the dude thinks it's his fault. I've been with quite a few hotties so I don't know what's going on. I'm on Lithium, Effexor, and Welbutrin for depression. Could that be the problem. Please help.

Medications like Effexor (SSRI antidepressants, which also include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, etc.) are known to have sexual side effects. And although Tracer means well, it simply is not true that you won't get an erection if the problem can be blamed on the drug. Not only have they been known to cause difficulty getting an maintaining an erection, they can also delay ejaculation for a long time.

Documentation for Welbutrin (also an antidepressant but which operates on different brain chemicals) and Lithium (a mood stabilizer), however, do not list sexual side effects with the other side effects.

Other things that can cause loss of erection are alcohol or drug abuse, poor blood pressure or other medical conditions, and the depression itself. And it is entirely possible that, after one or two episodes, your brain is so mindful of your erection status, you become distracted from the events going on between you and your partner.

You should check in with your physician to see if there are other alternatives. However, be careful. You would not be on such a combination if it wasn't noticed at some point you were facing quite a bit of stress. The desire to connect with a sexual partner can be strong, but it shouldn't outweigh the desire to maintain your day-to-day functioning.

yes that could be the problem. Effexor kills your sex drive. You also shouldn't be on both Effexor and Welbutrin- they do the same thing. Talk to your doctor about prescribing you 1 or the other or even switching. Welbutrin has the least sexual side effects, but it doesn't work as well for depression as effexor does.

Well, yes, your medication is part of the problem. Because anti-depressants can lower blood pressure, this will affect the blood flow and cause a form of impotency. The good news is, it is possible to deal with it. You depression is also a factor, perhaps you feel too nervous or have performance anxiety, which can also lead to impotence. I would strongly suggest you speak to your doctor about the side effects of the medication and what alternate treatment may be possible so as to not affect your libido.

Yes, your depression medications are probably the issue. Talk to your doctor, as I know of quite a few people who experienced this problem when they were put on their antidepressants. Hopefully, the doctor will find a balance that will work to allow you to be healthy mentally and sexually.

if it were the meds you wouldn't become aroused in the first place, it must be something emotional or mental, you might want to see a psyciatrist or sex therapist, i had that happen to me when i first came out, i don't know what caused it but it went away after awhile, it could be anxiety since this is new to you, i think that was my problem

The best solution is to gain control over it. As someone already said, stop when you're getting there and relax. Pay more attention to pleasuring your mate--orally, perhaps--and avoid rubbing your penis up against anything while doing so. It will take work on your part and patience on both parts. As a last resort, some antidepressants curb sexual functioning with the intention of learning the pleasure of restraint after which you could taper off them. Here's your goal: the longer you can delay your orgasm, the more intense it will be. So it isn't just a matter of satisfying your mate. This is the main reason some claim stoned sex is better, unlike drunk sex which can leave you unable to perform (brewer's droop). You enjoy exploring each other longer. And remember, oral isn't just one place. It's all over, paying particular attention to kissing, and TALK about what each of you like. Strange how people don't talk about sex when they're the ones doing it.
