Ectoplasm, in cytology, is the outer part of a cell's cytoplasm.
Still in biology, ectoplasm can refer to the outer bodily regions of the jelly fish.
Ectoplasm (parapsychology): A substance or spiritual energy "exteriorized" by physical mediums.
Ectoplasm is also a term used to describe the vapour appearing on the wings of an aircraft when it is performing high-energy manoeuvres. Typically this effect is seen by most people at airshows during modern jet fighter aerobatic displays. See also St. Elmo's Fire. This effect also has other names in other parts of the world.
Ectoplasm - A cocktail made with vodka.
Ectoplasm - A BBC7 radio play.

Ectoplasm can be either a solid, liquid or vaporous substance produced by ghosts or spirits; it is usually a milky white color and has an ozone smell. Some forms of ectoplasm are known to move in lifelike patterns.

Well one use of the word was coined during the spiritualist movement and you can find that definition here http://www.paranormality.com/ectoplasm.shtml.
Of course the definition will vary determining on the ghost hunter and their school of thought. Many ghost hunters/paranormal investigators including myself use the term ectoplasm to explain the foggy like mists in photographs taken at haunted locations. Often times these mists are spirits in motion or paranormal activity. The ectoplasm can be swirling or at rest. I ignore the spiritualist definition of the term because it is not associated with modern ghost hunting techniques This spirit plasma appears as swirls, vapor or as contrails left behind by fast moving orbs.
