sata is newer and faster, plus the smaller cable allows for better airflow throughout your case. you should be able to use both if you need too, however before you go out and purchase a sata card, make sure you have the latest sata drivers for your mobo, and preinstall them. some motherboards are picky about booting up for the first time off of a sata drive, so without knowing what kind you have i have to offer you that general advice, although regardless it would be a good thing to do. also make sure in your bios you have sata enabled before you start pulling your hair out. lots of times on older motherboards this option comes pre disabled from the factory, for whatever reason i don't know. also it wouldnt hurt to check with your manufacturer. hope this helps.

At the moment there is no real difference, the drives are identical except for the interface. The SATA interface can handle faster speeds than IDE but currently the speed of drives is not limited by the interface. SATA does have some benefits though, the cables are smaller, drives can be hot plugged and new technology will appear in SATA drives first.
You can use both types at the same time without any problems.
You should get SATA because your next motherboard may not support IDE.

serial ata is faster access and you can in theory have as many hard drives fitted as you like that's the main difference between ide and sata
