Houston is hot and humid in the summer. The better times of year can be late fall and early spring. The humidity can be extremely miserable.
The prettier but more expensive areas are Seabrook, Clear Lake, Webster (south east) and up north in the Kingwood area.
Prices for groceries (produce) are high and quality is not that great. Shrimp is wonderfully priced since they gather it from the Gulf. There is no state income tax so that is a bonus.
Inside the loop (610 freeway) is very expensive also.Traffic in the loop is horrible. It is the 4th largest city in the US and a ton of construction is going on without much regard for the supporting infrastructure and it all seems to center around this roadway.

Houston is a great place to live if you are the kind of person that likes to take advantage of the free activities and gatherings held around the city yearly. The spectacular Christmas tree lighting on Post Oak held yearly on Thanksgiving Day evening is beautiful. As always a big city offers a myriad of cultural events that a smaller city does not offer. However, there is a trade off and that's more crime, precisely because it is a large city. There are good and bad pockets of neighborhoods all around the city. The nicer areas are more expensive. The suburbs are less expensive and safer, but remember the commute! If you are a homebody, then a smaller town would be better for you. But if you like the things I mentioned above, then Houston's for you. Oh, it's true, June, July and August are almost unbearable because of the heat and humidity. But on the other side, the other 9 months of the year are mild. No blizzards here during the winter! We won't talk about the hurricane scares. But one good things is that with hurricanes you have plenty of warning and you must always have supplies in your house during the season, June through November. If you decide to come, remember to ask the locals where the best buys are found. Welcome to Houston!
