Most horticulturists know the difference, so they are not usually listed. Your best bet is to go to your local nursery and look around. Most places will have the plants separated by perennial/annual, as well as shade/sun tolerant. Its hard to do research on the internet if you are not familiar with plant species.

I always suggest going to your local greenhouse. You might pay more the plants, but the staff is very dedicated and knowledgeable on how to tend to the plants best. I've tried asking questions at Wal-Mart and Lowes when they have their plants out, but the people who are working there GENERALLY SPEAKING don't know much about the plants.

To find out what plants are parennial or annual on the internet (google search or yahoo), you could do a search on each individual plant, but I suggest buying a gardenering almanac specific to your area. Your bookstore could help you find one and it will be handy over the years as you establish your new garden.

All you have to do is google "annual or perennial plant" or something similar and many sites come up, all of whom list bunches of each. Here's one:

google perrenial's but look for your zone and what type of light you are looking for there are lots of perrennials for sun like cone flowers, bee balm, red hot pokers and delphiniums (these are some of my favorites) or plants that take less sun like hostas, fox glove, dead nettle or corral bells again some of my favorites-I am a zone 4 in Montana good luck one of my favorite web sites is Wayside Gardens.
