I'm doing a speech for my debate class and I was thinking about doing it on domestic abuse...woulld that be a good one? Also our speeches have to have a distinct purpose like to inform about, to persuade, etc. What could my purpose be?
And I'm just starting so if anyone has any other good topic ideas let me know! Thanks a bunch!

Okay guys, this isn't a debate speech. It's not a one side or the other kind of thing. Yes the class is called debate, but it's not about debate. (I know, weird) But it's basically a speech giving- communication class. So it doesn't have to be on one side of the subject or the other!

How about an informative speech on domestic violence in which the victim is male and the batterer is female.

First of all - 1. Are you for or against Domestic Abuse.
2. Can you do a speech on Domestic Abuse for the affirmative?
3. Can you persuade a person to conduct Domestic Abuse?

4. Domestic Abuse is bad thing in a family. Be the Husband or the Wife, or older sibling's etc.

I would choose another subject if I were you. Speech teachers always want the person who comes up with the subject to act that it is alright to have Domestic abuse in the home and let others act in the negative.

Do you see my point?

Domestic abuse is a very difficult subject, and one which you should not debate unless you know law - as it has elements of criminality in it which involve the law. The most important thing about debating is to state your own knowledge or feelings about the subject. If you have no knowledge or feelings, you won't win the debate. Remember your punch line. Mine was "There is no defense against the atomic bomb" in a debate one time, and I forgot the punch line. :-) A good subject might be - "Should we end the war in Iraq right away". That will get everyone's attention, as it is being debated today in real life.

You have to do something that could be argued for or against. Domestic abuse is pretty globally a bad thing.
Maybe try something more a long the lines of pre-marital sex, SUV and their gas cosumptions, or the right to bear arms.
