What evidence exists in Steinbeck's novels to connect them to the Depression Era?

Well, I guess the evidence is the novels themselves. "Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men" were definitely set during the Depression.
His characters in both books struggled with the conditions caused by the depression - poverty, homelessness, hopelessness.
