ok lets get past the stigma that ALL sex offenders are child molesters. They're NOT! The answer to this question resides in the conditions of the person in questions PROBATION. If the person in question is in fact convicted of a crime involving chldren then NO they cannot be left in charge of children due to a violation of their court imposed probation, and it's just not a good idea. If in fact the person in question is convicted of a crime against an adult then their probation does not include children and yes they can legally babysit for you. However; I may go off on a bit of a rant here, the word sex offender does include but is not limited to sex crimes against children, lets get have an example shall we. John is 18, Jane is 17, lets say they live in Delaware where the age of consent is 18. John and Jane have intercourse, Jane's parents find out. They dont like John so they tell the police and have John arrested for, all together now STATUTORY RAPE. Which means that although Jane consented to the act John is labeled a "Sex Offender" and is placed into the same category as child molesters and repeat rapists. So before you pass judgement on someone try to learn the backstory.

Most people make the mistake of assuming that all sex offenders are child molesters. Most are not!!! and I feel that each case should be look at as individual instances.

In response to THE GIFT, maybe a little sensitivity training might be in order.

A Sexual offender is not suppose to be around children
especially if his offense was against them.
Any one that knows of such a situation should report it to the authorities.

I would think it would be forbidden in most offenders probation or parole after than its up to state law. You can bet if the person babysits and gets popped again whilst using that job. They are gone for good as they should be. I can only imagine one reason a sex offender who is in for molesting would want to babysit.

The term "sexual offender" is ridiculously broad, and (depending on state) can include everything from child rapists to people caught urinating in public.

So, before you use the term, make sure it accurately describes the category of people you are asking about.
