For somebody in the past look into Frank Shorter won gold medal in the marathon 1972 Olympics 1ST American to do this in 64 years. Bill Rodgers won Boston and New York city Marathon 4 times 1975-80. This was a golden era for marathon running in the USA.
Some big names in athletics include Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis, Florence Griffith Joyner , Gail Devers, Maurice Green, and Edwin Moses ( known for the hurdles).
Due to recent scandals it gets hard for more current era runners - Alan Webb broke the USA record in the mile 3:53:.43 after 36 years made some news , but probably not a household name. He did this on May27,2001 and yes he still competes.
One more name again this is historical Wilma Rudolph she suffered from polio as a child and went on to win 3 gold medals in the (100m, 200m, 4x100 relay) 1960 Olympics. ESPN did a special on her as part of their to 50 athletes.

Edwin Moses, won 107 straight 400 meter hurdles races.
