Other than the games specifically for the Wii, are there games from other platforms that can be used and can the motion detectors still be used?

The Wii plays Wii and Gamecube game discs. You can also download games that were on older systems: NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, TurboGrafx 16 and Neo Geo. This is the "Virtual Console" (VC) feature of the Wii. Including the Wii, that's 8 platforms you can play on it!

For the Gamecube games, the motion controllers cannot be used - you have to attach the wired GameCube controllers.

For the VC games, some work with the Wii controllers, some with the GC controllers, some with the Wii "classic" controller. When you download the game, it shows which controllers work with it.

The motion-sensing part of the Wii controllers works only with the Wii games. Even though the remote can be used with some of the older VC games, it is only the buttons that are used, not motion.

Game discs from other platforms, like PS2 or Dreamcast, will not work on the Wii.

The Wii allows you to download classic games from the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Turbografx 16, and N64 via the Shop Channel/Virtual Console.

You can play some Sega, Neo-Geo, etc. games from the Virtual Console. For games other than the Wii, I don't think you can use the Wii-mote to play the game because back then, the Wii-mote hasn't even been invented yet, so the games didn't have the Wii-mote in mind. Even with the GC games, you still can't use the Wii-mote because it wasn't programmed into the game.

Only Wii games will take advantage of the Wii-mote.

of course! all gamecube games can be played on the Wii, but i'm not sure which games have support with the motion detectors. Nintendo may find a way to implement motion detection to certain gamecube games, such as:

metroid prime and MP 2, Starfox adventures, Starfox assault, and the zelda games

if not, you're out of luck
