The movie is ambiguous, but in real life it is widely assumed that he killed himself.

In the movie it remained a mystery at the end. They gave a few different scenarios throughout the picture: suicide, angry girlfriend, jealous married lover, his lover's husband.

In real life it still remains a mystery. No one knows.
