I am studying to be a Pharm Tech and someone said jokingly, when I asked about job duties, that one of the duties is getting addicted to hydocodone. Is it easy for PT to steal medication? I figured that it would be imposible since inventory is done and stuff. Plus, what do they do with old expired meds? Throw them out? I'm just curious because this is not the first time someone has hinted at addiction when being a Pharm Tech. I would never steal since I need my job, but I have had a few pills missing over the years when I went to get a prescription filled for this and that and it has now made me wonder...

NO!!

My exntended family owns a pharmacy and in Canada/US, there are very tight controls on prescriptions medications. Not only are they accounted for, you can be PROSECUTED for stealing! I knew one pharmacist who was fired for making too many mistakes with the med accounts.

Stealing meds is equivalent to dealing illicit drugs!

One of the top reasons for pharm techs to be fired is because of stealing.
It is actually harder to steal the schedule 2 drugs because they are locked in a cabinet.
The expired meds are thrown away.
You might have missed pills because the wrong number was placed into the bottle. That is actually a relatively common error.

Yes it is; since the one doing the inventory is usually the pharm tech. If you have any missing pills, report them to your supervisor immediately. A word of advise; don't try to save anybody and don't assume that is a one time occurrence. If someone is stealing pills that's an addict.
