Is there not a conflict in a society that tolerates so called "honor killings" (of women by their male and sometimes even female family members) and at the same time pushing the empowerment of women?

Only Muslims kill family members for preserving family honor.

The Quran may or may not mandate this, but the Hadiths certainly command the faithful to preserve "family honor" in this manner, despite the fact that the Western mentality abhors such murders.

Here are three of the many Hadiths:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol 2. pg 1009; and Sahih Muslim Vol 2. pg 65:
Hadhrat Abdullah ibne Abbaas (Radiallahu Anhu) narrates the lecture that Hadhrat Umar (Radiallaahu Anhu) delivered whilst sitting on the pulpit of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) said, "Verily, Allah sent Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) with the truth, and revealed the Quran upon him. The verse regarding the stoning of the adulterer/ess was from amongst the verse revealed (in the Quraan). We read it, secured it and understood it. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) stoned and we stoned after him. I fear that with the passage of time a person might say, 'We do not find mention of stoning in the Book of Allah and thereby go astray by leaving out an obligation revealed by Allah. Verily, the stoning of a adulterer/ress is found in the Quraan and is the truth, if the witnesses are met or there is a pregnancy or confession."

Sahi Muslim No. 4206:
"A woman came to the prophet and asked for purification by seeking punishment. He told her to go away and seek God's forgiveness. She persisted four times and admitted she was pregnant. He told her to wait until she had given birth. Then he said that the Muslim community should wait until she had weaned her child. When the day arrived for the child to take solid food, Muhammad handed the child over to the community. And when he had given command over her and she was put in a hole up to her breast, he ordered the people to stone her. Khalid b. al-Walid came forward with a stone which he threw at her head, and when the blood spurted on her face he cursed her."

Sahi Buchari: 8:6814:
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari: "A man from the tribe of Bani Aslam came to Allah's Messenger [Muhammad] and informed him that he had committed illegal sexual intercourse; and he bore witness four times against himself. Allah's Messenger ordered him to be stoned to death as he was a married person."

In my opinion there is no much of a conflict. In every society there are different groups with conflicting interests and agendas. There are liberal and conservative powers that push things in opposite directions. Even in western societies you can be witness to that same phenomenon. The best example is modern Turkey. At the same time parts of the population are genuinely liberal and other more traditional resist the change. If we see society as an integrated whole there is a conflict. There is no conflict if we are able to distinguish the different social powers that act within the society.

Which society would that be?

Probably an Islamic society, unfortunately Islam aint to kind on women. It's a barbaric and cruel belief system, and yet we can't criticise it because it is a religion.

You don't see many Muslims pushing for the empowerment of women, so there's not really a conflict there.

Thank god we don't have that kind of thing in the west.

To ivri -There is a reference to this punishment in the Bible, for instance. It reads: "If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die." (Deuteronomy 22: 22) and also in Leviticus, we find the following verse:"If a man commits adultery with another man's wife-with the wife of his neighbor-both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death" (Leviticus 20: 10).
To callum- islam does gve rights 2 women only of u cud open ur eyes n see da truth rather dan only wantin 2 see wat ur eyes want 2 see.
The punishment for adultery is very clear in the Qur'an: 'Flog each of them with a hundred stripes' (24:3). The Quran does not differentiate between married and unmarried. Nevertheless, there are a number of hadith, according to which during the times of the Prophet (pbuh), some people involved in the crime were stoned to death. Stoning to death for offences such as adultery is not a Quranic law and is therefore unIslamic. The supreme source of Islam is the holy Quran, any hadith that contradicts it can not be accepted as Sahih.
There is no such concept in Islam that is called “honor killing”.
Honor killing could be a wrong cultural tradition. It is unjust and inhumane action. The murderer of that type deserves punishment. its based on ignorance and disregard of morals and laws, which cannot be abolished except by disciplinary punishments.

Of course it's a conflict!

But whenever you try to change an entire society's morals, it takes time!

(Don't believe me? Look how long Blacks were oppressed in America - long after the Civil War there were the Jim Crow laws.)

The answer is of course there is a conflict.
