I've realised that I have only ever read classical plays, I need to start reading contempory plays before beginning any uni courses in Sept. I'm looking for plays that are no more than 20 yrs old. Hope someone can help!

"The Homecoming" by Harold Pinter

Gem of the Ocean by August Wilson

Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks

I recommend all three books. But more importantly, I recommend the authors. Read anything by these authors and you will not go wrong.
They are all contemporary playwrights.

Well, if you'll bend the rules a little bit...I would recommend The Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henley. It was 1985 though :) It's the only work I've read by Henley, but she has many others that would fall into your range:
The Lucky Spot: A Play. New York: Dramatists Play Service, 1987.
Abundance. New York: Dramatists Play Service, 1991.
The Debutante Ball. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1991.
Beth Henley: Four Plays. Portsmouth, N.H.: Heinemann/Methuen, 1992.
Monologues for Women. Toluca Lake, California: Dramaline Publications, 1992.
The Debutante Ball. New York: Dramatists Play Service, 1997.
Collected Plays: Volume I, 1980-1989. Lyme, N.H.: Smith & Kraus, 2000.
Collected Plays: Volume II, 1990-1999. Lyme, N.H.: Smith & Kraus, 2000.
Family Week. 2000.
Signature. New York: Dramatists Play Service, 2003.
Revelers. New York: Dramatists Play Service, 2003.

I don't know the playwright, but an hysterical play is called "The Foreigner." It's an amazingly funny comedy. I laughed through the entire thing (saw it on stage). Basically it's about a shy gentleman who pretends he doesn't understand English. You will split your sides :)
