Beta test is usually a pre-release version of the game used for testing any potential bugs before releasing the game.

More than likely Halo 3 beta will not be available, except for a few lucky testers.

Basically, it's a lazy way for developers to find all the bugs in a game before it gets released by letting the public test out the game and have them report any errors that they see, and it's also to balance out the game play because different people have different strategies.

For Halo 3, it's MS's way to hype up the game and to sell Crackdown by including the Halo 3 Beta invitation.

The Beta was avilable for people whio applied on line and people who bought the initial release Crackdown games. The on line application period is over. Many Crackdown games are still available.

The Beta gives you a chance to play the multuplayer aspect of Halo 3. Your feedback will help the people at Bungie look to see how well their servers handle the game play. They'll also be looking for feedback on the game play itself so they can improve the final release version which will probably be out in November.
