why can a person think smart but speak with no substance

Maybe your not allowing yourself to directly state your thoughts. Are you dumbing down what you're saying so as to allow the person with whom you are speaking to better understand you? Are you putting up blocks on your conversation skills so as to not sound like you are as intelligent as you believe yourself to be?
