i hit a car and i left a scratch approximately 8 inches long, the paint was scraped off, and i kind of scratched the front headlight also. the owner of the car called back and said the estimate is 1597.99 and i know there is no way in hell that the repair cost can be that high.. they have a camry 2005 and is their estimate too high?

I think i would tell him to get more estimates them one. And to show you the paper where it is that much he could be making that up. IF i was you make him get more estimated. When i had my wreck I got 3 estimates and they all were different. Like 200$ differnce.

Car Paint Repair Estimate

I had a small nick in my bumper (about half the size of my pinky nail) and it was going to be around $700 to fix it so I would say that it is possible that the estimate that you recieved is an honest estimate. The reason it costs so much is because they have to paint the entire bumper and blend the paint to match the rest of the car. As a car gets older and is exposed to the elements the paint changes from its original color and we may not notice it because it is even but if you were to put new paint on it you would see it. However, you should be going through your insurance. If you decided to bypass your insurance then tell the person that you have no problem paying for the repair but you would like to see them have 3 estimates from 3 different places so that you can make sure that all parties involved are not getting ripped off. This does not mean that you should go with the cheepest one either because you wouldent want them to get a crappy job done on their car. Asking for several estimates is fair and honest and estimates are free. Just make sure to use a soothing tone in your voice and express that you do want to make the matter right and the estimate is fair but you have always heard that there should be atleast 3 estimates for any work done (cars, in home anything where you would hire someone to work on a personaly owned item). I do feel that most places charge outrageous prices and your little fenderbender may cost you that amount of money but just back yourself up with several estimates and do your best to pay for it. If you are working with another reasonable adult then you should be able to fix this in a reasonable amount of time with the least amount of stress possible. I hope everything works out for the best for you. Good luck.

If it was me the first thing I would do would be get a copy of the estimate. We are not in a position to say yes or no as we can't see the car. There can be hidden damages. It is your right to have it taken to a shop of your choice for a second estimate. If you feel strongly that you are being taken for a ride get a handful of estimates from different body shops. Watch this one as you may be right.

Ive been doing auto body work on the side for about 5 years now, and unfortunately that's an accurate estimate, its the fact that it went through the paint, now that whole section of the car has to be repainted and blended to match, plus some headlights can run as high as 300 to 400 dollars.

1600 Dollars is not bad the shop will have to replace the head light and remove the fender and do the body work then sand prime and paint the fender and reinstal it. As a tech I think you are pretty lucky not to have dented or bent the car that is expensive around 3000 so your Good.

how deep was the scratch, tell him you want a copy of the estimate and what will be done. Shop around and see if you can get a better price.

Actually it sounds a bit low to me. Turn it in, let your insurance handle it, and be prepared to pay whatever your deductible is.
