This is no longer the case. Google just opened up gmail to the rest of the world maybe 2 weeks ago. They were using invites to control the amount of users when they were in the beta mode (testing phase).

This means now you can go to gmail.com and signup yourself.

Why would you *want* to be invited to Gmail? It's yet another webmail service, only with intrusive advertising that reads your email and gives you adverts based on what the message says.

Sign up for Yahoo Mail UK (link below) or something, turn on POP Forwarding, and get an email client like Mozilla Thunderbird (link below). No more adverts, well except for the spam but you'd get that anyway and Thunderbird can filter whatever Yahoo's own spam protection misses. Plus you get as much storage as you can fit onto your computer.

But in any case, you don't need to be invited any more, you can just go sign up...

It's been open beta for a VERY long time. I got my account back in October '06 without an invitation. You just had to have a mobile phone that could receive TXT messages.

However, they've now opened it to where you don't even need a phone anymore.
