They are pretty picky. They used to like Harry Potter and series of unfortunate evens. They read very slow, so make it in between 130-250 pages.

Please say the title, author, and # of pages

Is it a girl or a boy? I recommend house of the scorpion. its a really fast paced interesting book. it's by Nancy Farmer. It is 400 pages, but if they read harry potter then they must be used to reading books that long.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. 375 pages. You're probably thinking why would I bother suggesting a book that is longer than 250 pages...can't I read??? Well I also know that it's not the length of a book that matters. It is the content. It is the pacing. It is the action. If a book is funny or exciting. If a book is good. It doesn't matter if it's long or short because you'll WANT to read it. A book can be short and boring or long and boring.

You might also be interested in audio books. If they're well produced, they can add excitement and pleasure to the reading process. And the added benefit of more than one person can read it at the same time. I haven't listened to Lightning Thief, but I have listened to its sequel Sea of Monsters.

Endymion Spring by Matthew Skelton its about a kid who finds a magical book made out of dragons skin. it contains all the books ever written but someone evil is after the book. I really loved this book, i reccommended it to my friend to read to her students.

The Artimis Fowel books are really good. They are about a kid who finds the world of farries and tries to steal thier gold but in a way ends up befriending them. The first one has a secret code at the bottom of the book that they can try to figure out which i think is pretty cool

Aslo i like the Harry Potter books and found these to be in the same vein so if they like HP they should like these.

If it's for a girl, I would try The Babysitters Club by Anne M. Martin. I was in love with those books when I was that age. The page number varies, but there are tons of them. Which means you'll always have a present ready. ^.^

Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, 186 pages. Spinelli, by the way, has won a Newberry Medal for Maniac Magee, and a Newberry Honor for Wringer. Stargirl is about an unusual girl who is made fun of in High school. This book is good because it teaches children a lot about high school and popularity, and their morals and beliefs. Stargirl is a person of infinite kindness, and she tries to teah her schoolmates that. Good for kids going into high school.

How about starting them on the Pern series? Anne Mc Caffrey's dragonrider books are great. or James Patterson's Maximum Ride books for YA readers. I think there are 2 of them and a third comes out this year.

You could try the Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke. I'm not sure how many pages are in it but its not too bad. And it fits right in with the teen fantasy genre. Or you could always try like a collection of short stories but i don't know any good ones.
