Which americans are you referring to?

The founding fathers?

They knew what happened when you had a 'unitary executive' in control of the government. They got tired of dealing with the one they had in England, and decided to become 'insurgents' and managed to free themselves from tyranny.

They would roll over in their graves if they saw the current state of the union.

Are you talking about civil war times? Each state was afraid that the national government would not cater to its needs but rather the needs of other states. Each state thought they could take care of themselves better and were fearful to release their sovereignity to a national government.

Um, let's think about this. If we had a national government, our constitutional rights as we know them would be GONE. Nobody should have sole control over everyone. That's psycho. Say a crazy dictator type comes into power---we're screwed. And we can't fight back because we will be DISARMED! That's really frightening. I like knowing that there are Millions of Americans who have guns. That way, if anyone tries to invade us, we can blow them away and protect what is OURS.

Our government is a system of checks and balances. The executive (president) can not influence the decisions of the judiciary (court system). The legislative (congress) can not influence the decisions of the judiciary. The judiciary makes keeps an eye on the judiciary and the legislature.

That's why we don't have political coups!
