I'm a strong standardized test-taker and have scored around a 163 on two practice LSAT's (under close to test conditions). Should I spend the large sum of money on a prep course (Kaplan, etc) or would I benefit just as much by just taking alot of practice exams on my own? I'd like to score around 168-171.

NO NO NO. i really have to disagree with the previous posts. i was very similar to you - scoring low 160s cold. i *did* take an LSAT prep course, and found it absolutely unhelpful. you can only go as fast as the slowest person in the class. you're going to be taking the course with people scoring in the 140s. you're clearly beyond that. buy a couple books with 10 LSATs in them, and just take practice test after practice test. you will learn the material just as well. i found that method far more helpful than the class itself. it's a waste of time, and it costs a huge amount of money for the small benefit you'll get. i did very well on the LSAT, and that was purely due to my own time studying. with you at a 163, a few more practice tests under your belt and you can easily raise your score 5, 7, 10 points and get into a top school. trust me. feel free to email if you have any questions. :-)

Absolutely. This is an investment into your future. You're not going to get into the really good law schools with a 163. Upping it to a 171 is realistic for you.

Sure taking lots of practice exams on your own will help some. However, you haven't spent a ton of time learning techniques that work. You may stumble upon some, but you're just reinventing the wheel. To be blunt, that's just stupid.

I went to a first tier law school. Ranked pretty decently. Most people would love to get into my school. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have loved to have gotten into a top 10 school. It really does open more doors.

YES!!! Take the course, for crying out loud! I can't tell you how many lawyers I have talked to who didn't take the LSAT prep course and tanked on their first try (and we're talking about some of the sharpest people on the planet) but did well enough to get into the best law programs in the U.S. their second time around. It's really worth it.
