Here's one effect. After Watergate, the Executive branch lost some power. Cheney and Rumsfeld were around then, and they resented having their hands tied as aides to Pres. Ford. They used their 2001 reentry into government as VP and Sec Def as an opportunity to steal back more power for the President and then some. This is why many people now say and believe we are living under a dictatorship and that Congress, from 2001 through 2006 became nothing more than a rubber stamp for the President's and Vice Presidents wishes and desires to expand their power even further.

Because Richard Nixon authorized a burglary, and got caught, the people that voted republican took a vow, to try to make any democrat that ever holds office look somewhat as bad. It's just too bad that they can not see their is potential for all to lie. This blindness and rage has certainly clouded their opinions regarding this president and his cooked intel about Iraq.
