If one spouse files and takes the standard deduction, and LATER the other spouse files and itemizes, what will happen?

Nobody can file as head of household, filing jointly is not an option.

The spouse who took the standard deduction will have to amend their return. If possible do it before the end of the tax season.

I don't know that it matters. You should call your local H&R Block (or equivalent) tax office and ask them. If you're filing seperately, it shouldn't matter what the other person uses as their deductions. I could be wrong, that's why I suggest you check.
