Do you have a local school for the Deaf? Sometimes, these schools will offer very low cost ASL classes. You can also find them through your community colleges. But most places will require some sort of fee.

An alternative, although it's not a class, is a meetup. Go to meetup.com and search for a sign language group near you. Although you'd need to learn ASL on your own, you could practice with the group.

I don't know about free, but have you looked into your local adult education courses thru the public school district?? They are far less expensive and will give you a nice start to learning ASL.
