I got a roll of D Dollars, and found about half were one way and half were the other. Is this an expect thing or an error.

I tend to think it is the way it is and not an error, but some are posted on ebay as errors.

I hope there is a serious coin collector who can answer this.

It doesn't matter whether the heads or tails side is facing up because the edge lettering is applied randomly, so a coin with upside down edge lettering is NOT an edge lettering error!

Being some of them from the Denver mint are right side up, I'd say this is an error. I'm not sure how common it is, the mint hasn't said anything about it yet. I suspect a large quantity was printed with this error though..

I think that the real ones are upside down so that counterfeiters are less likely to get it right. I'm not sure though.
