The US are called a "republic" in the constitution, which at the time it was written was synonymous with "democracy". (No one really envisaged the proletariat and women voting at that time.)
The word "republic" comes from the Latin "res publica"= "thing of the people", as opposed to rule by a monarch.
Throughout their history, the US never were a true democracy, decisions always lay in the hand of a few rich people, what is known as an "oligarchy"
