Heck yeah! That's what they're there for. BUT, I must say I haven't had much luck with the cosmetic counter ladies. Many of them don't know what the heck they are talking about. My advice.... Let the lady try a couple of shades on you, then ask for small samples (clinique will pour a bit into a little container.) Check how it looks in natural light (so many times you can't really tell till you get outside) and then use the sample at home. THEN if you like it, go back and buy it. I always ask the girl for her card, and say that if I come back and buy it I will do so under her name since she helped me. That way she doesn't feel like she wasted her time, and I don't feel like I'm pressured to make a rushed decision.

Look this is how I did it. I called an made an appointment to get my make up done for a special occasion. Then while there I found out much more about make than I ever knew before. It may seem a bit pricey but it can be a one time thing so the price is for the knowledge you leave with. Ask questions they are always glad to talk about the products they use and how to use them. The best part was that at a salon you have more privacy and its easier to talk and feel comfortable.

Most of those girls (or guys) have no cosmetic experience although they are trained to help people with color. All they will really do is try several colors on your skin to see which goes well. From personal experiece though, I've been to many different places and they always pick a color that looks well in the florescent lighting but the moment I step outside, it's way too dark. Its fun to have them experiment on you (hey, free makeovers always good), but dont get pushed into buying a color or formula you don't like. I always go for a shade lighter than they pick out.

Yeah, my aunt first introduced me to make-up in high school at the Clinique counter at Macy's. They were very helpful and the products are great but expensive. I now use Maybeline Matte Moose foundation. It gives (almost) the same effect and it's not as pricey.

The best place to go at the mall for that is prescriptives. They're a branch off of Estee` Lauder. Their whole thing is that that are supposed to match it to your skin tone perfectly.

I'm 40 and I still go to the cosmetic counter when my favorite shade is discontinued. It's one way to do it. You could go the drugstore, spend your money and chance it.
