I read the book but I cannot grasp the symbols?

I think one of the more obvious symbols is the tree. The various ways she uses that image in her art--the only redeeming subject she's enrolled at in school--is her main way of expressing herself...of coming to terms with what happened...of coping...of her life and growth in general. I can also think of her symbolic artistic creation with the turkey bones from Thanksgiving. Isn't there a broken Barbie doll involved in that one? Anyway, I think most will be art-related...

I agree about the tree.

Also, the lack of a school mascot. They keep changing the school mascot, and can't decide on one that is appropriate that everyone likes. I saw this as a parallel with Melinda's inability to find a "clan". Her friends all found new friends/cliques to hang out with, and she had one.
