OK. Strictly he wasn't sacked, he was told to resign. But does this show that the Tories are now only about 100 years behind the rest of civilised society in their thinking, or is Cameron totally out of step with real Tory thinking on race matters?

Strange that Mercer said he had never come across it in his battalion? Kind of makes you ask the question "Where did he come across it"?
A Lt Colonel Plonker of the highest order!

So what you are really saying is that the Tories are just like our GOP in that they are about 100 years behind the rest of civilized society in their thinking. Oh wait, the Tories may just be ahead of the GOP in their thinking. The GOP and the Bush administration in particular, have a very southern plantation mind set and policy structure.

even though this guy got sacked it just the start of the old tory way. There's no way to get these old single minded self serving people out of the tory party. Watch this space for more fun and games.

I think it is wrong that Mercer felt he had to resign. What has happened to this country when a man cannot openly discuss the experiences that he had found whilst serving in the Army.

If he was being racist, so what. We all have our prejudices and likes and dislikes. Most of which is opinion formed out of our experiences.

Who would be so arrogant as to say that that opinion is wrong and that theirs is the right one?

because of the fact the twenty third century is in simple terms too darn plenty exciting. does no longer you be kicking and screaming if some luddite leftie replaced into attempting to get rid of your replicator under the guise of it being environmentally unfriendly and make you utilize 18th century technologies for each little thing?

His statement about uless black soldiers in the British Army is unfair, as there are just as many useless white soldiers too. I believe from speaking to men who are serving that red haired soldiers get more stick to be true. In my opinion a silly remark and he got what he deserved. However, what happened to free speech. Why was he sacked when John Prescott is either punching men, getting moved to the side and be able to keep his job and playing Croquet? John Prescott is far more guilty of silly crimes and he wasn't sacked.

Cameron used kneejerk politics and should have backed his man and go on about the glories of free speech in the UK, privately wiped the floor with him but publicly demonstrate that in a democracy you are entitled to your opinion and not let the PC crowd take over.

In his fight to get to the left of Blair, the truth and those who speak it must go. I hope that this most pathetic leader will destroy the remnants of the Conservative party as soon as possible so a new party worthy of the name can be reborn from the ashes.

It proves that the Tories have the balls to get rid of people unlike Labour who just blame someone else, or give people like John Prescott an extra 600, 000 pounds to improve their croquet.

Cameron is a buffoon. Mercer is a bigger buffoon. He hasn't even apologised, the t0sser. All he said was he regretted any offence he had caused.
And did you HEAR the interview he deigned to give to the BBC's cultural affairs corr? He referred to "coloured people"!!!!
The Tories will never join the ranks of civilised people. They're intellectually incapable of moving with the times.
