=C8+. what does this formula do?

Well, if you are in Excel, it would mean you would be creating a formula using the cell C8, then the + would be you adding another cell to it.

Do you mean Excel? Word doesn't have formulas...
In Microsoft Excel this means that you're referencing what's in cell C8, plus.... something is missing. You can either remove the + or add whatever it was meant to add to cell C8.

That look like an incomplete formula. =c8 is the cell in excel. If you do something like =c8+c5. It will add what ever from c8+c5 and give you the sum.
