In 1995 the Quebec Nordiques franchise relocated to Denver, Colorado and one year later in 1996 they won Lord Stanley’s Cup. In 1997 the Hartford Whalers relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and nine years later they too won the Holy Grail of hockey. It now looks like there is a strong possibility that one of the leagues best teams, currently known as the Pittsburgh Penguins, is about to relocate to another city. So my question is, how long before they too hoist Lord Stanley’s Mug?

This is the last year of the Penguins-so they will never win it as the Penguins-maybe the KC Roadapples will win it in two years.

If they keep their core players together, probably not too long, maybe a couple years or so. With Crosby, Staal, and Malkin up front, Ray Whitney amongst others on defence, and Marc-Andre Fleury in net, this team has the potential in a couple of years to do some serious damage in both the regular season and playoffs, maybe even win the Cup. Hell, with a couple of upsets this year, who knows, they might just do it this year. The fans of this team are going to have a lot to cheer about for years to come, because these guys are definitely looking much like the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s, who won 5 Stanley Cups when it was all said and done out there for them, so it is very much possible for these Penguins to do something similar in today's NHL if they keep everyone together.

Relocation is sort of a non-issue on this Cup idea as you left out the Yotes or Barons (pre-Seals and pre-Stars merger) who have never won it all.

I would say the best analogy is the Pens with Mario. They made the playoffs for the first time in his career in 1989 and then won a Cup in '91. Ditto the Oil w/ Gretz, made playoffs in '80 and three years later won it all. So within four seasons is my best guess whether they move or not.

i see them doing great this year, by at least making it to the second round no further. i just don't see it happening within the next 3 years. look at the Edmonton Oilers of the early 80's one of the greatest teams and it took them 5 years to finally win the Stanley cup. and this was with Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Anderson, Coffey, Fuhr and so on but they we're all young like Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Armstong, Fleury. but this team can do some serious damage in the next 3 years maybe 4 by getting the experience they really need the playoffs.

they will make a good run this year but they won't quite get there. i give it 3-4 years before they get back on top and when that happens watch out cause they will be nearly unbeatable if they're able to keep the team together

Until they acquire goaltending they won't. The goalies they have, just don't cut it. They should have went after Biron vice Laroque ... come the playoffs, Laroque won't see much icetime ... a half decent goalie would have. Everyteam that has gone anywhere in the playoffs has had outstanding goaltending ... there is no comfy feeling when you see who Pittsburgh has in net ... no matter who it is.

I can dream that they do it this year. Short of that I say in about 2 or 3 years. I just wouldn't see them doing it next year.

soon. move or not, they win within the next 3 seasons. crosby is hot, malkin and staal are beginning to get big, the other young guns (Fleury, Christensen, Malone) and the oldies (Recchi, Gonchar, Roberts) are doing spectacular
