AVG anti virus Free Edition, and Ad-aware SE. both can be found on download.com

I also recommend at least another 512 of RAM when you get the money to spare.

well what is slowing your computer down is the 512 ram. i would suggest finding a way to save some money for more. but you can defrag alot. and dont keep programs on there that you dont use.

I know this isn't the answer you want and can't use it due to lack of money but the answer for anyone else who is reading this is that 512Mb is not really enough RAM today.

Anyone buying a PC, for more than minimal use, needs to budget for at least 1Gb of RAM if you want it to work smoothly (especially with Vista) and 2Gb is recommended.

Adding another application to the load on your RAM is likely to make things a little worse rather than better.

Clean your harddisk from trash with ccleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com

Remove not needed programs from startup

Start ccleaner again, goto "extras" "startup"
Run "msconfig", remove all checkmarks from not needed entries in the startup tab

Defragment your harddrive

Use a virus scanner that does not block your CPU

AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)

Check your virtual swap pagefile memory, it should be not more than 1.5 times than the real memory

These are the quickwins to start...

Good luck
