The dealers are far outnumbered by the junkies. Although dealers might turn to other crimes the increase would be nothing in comparison to all the users who would no longer need to commit crimes to feed their habit.

Back when drugs where legal gangs had knives and their fists. When alcohol prohibition was in act mobs formed and and they carried tommy guns. Now that drugs are illegal, they now have AKs and Tec-9s. You ask any gang member what they make most profit on it would be drugs. What dirty way do you think they will get the money? Robbers, there already are. That won't change but a robber is more likely to get caught then a dealer. So I don't see your point. As far a an alarming rate of drug addicts, I doubt people would start snorting cocaine because it's legal. Just look at the drop in the use of tobacco now that people know the health risks.

Not all of them -- many would go into supply of other things, and those sticking with crime, not necessarily as successfully, since a lot of the crimes you mention require different skills.
Furthermore, by taking the industry out of the hands of criminals, those people wouldn't be creating new junkies for profit.
Over time, there wouldn't be people going into the "profession" of dealing, as there'd be no profit in it.
Young people living in impoverished areas would no longer see the only rich people around them get that way selling drugs.
You'd also nearly eliminate theft by people who are trying to pay for drugs. And drug wars, which kill a lot of innocent people -- people in the wrong place at the wrong time, when drug dealers are fighting over territory.
But you miss the rest of the argument, the heart of the argument.
Since drug USE is not the problem, it's wrong to choose a few drugs, and make people criminals for using them. Let people get high if they want; what's it to you?
Some people drink, some toke (some do so for very good reasons, like staying alive rather than starving to death from meds that make them vomit, as one example).
Why prevent people from having a wacky mushroom once in a while?
There's no good reason to.
Since drug ABUSE is a health problem, the way to deal with it is AS a health (and psychological) problem.
Treating it as a crime is ineffective, even counter-productive.

Lets face a basic reality here. If drugs become legal, and it brings the prices down, more welfare 'cash money' will be spent on them, children and teens will be able to buy more and even though the dealers may have to deal with a price reduction, just think how many more people will be taking them.
This country can then count on drug users all over, without a clear head. Would this be our new way of living? There shouldn't be ANY drug dealers. That's no way to make a living...by taking advantage of something habitual which kills and destroys. This drug world 'sucks' and should be overthrown...God willing. But it won't...because too many 'stupid people' are hooked. There is NO REASON GOOD ENOUGH TO START TAKING DRUGS. Don't give me the lecture about people in poverty having no choice. They do have a choice, and if they're in REAL POVERTY, then why spend it on drugs. When the HIGH is over...their problems and poverty are still there and they look to government for financial assistance.
I do NOT have one ounce of sympathy for anyone on drugs, where a mind/mood altering affect is found necessary by the user. Sorry, but there's no reason good enough. The world does NOT become a better place when you're high.

Unfortunately it is the profits from illegal drug dealing that finance the weapons that they use to kill each other as well as the innocent bystanders.
Furthermore, our prisons are over crowded with drug dealers and because of this, real criminals like pedophiles and rapists get out of prison on parole before they have finished even half of their sentence.
So it's your choice drug dealers on the streets or child molesters and rapists on the streets.
Don't get me wrong, after legalization it will be bad for a while, but with a pure cheep product available most of the junkies will OD quickly.

Drugs should be made legal, we could then tax them; education is the key to not using the drugs; American drug companies would make a better safer drug than any drug-dealer could.
Regardless of what you think now, Innocent people are getting huirt by drug dealers every day; overdoses, due to unknown substance quality, drug turf wars, drug hits, corruption hits, police misconduct issues....
Drug dealers may go into another line of crime, but I can't think of one as lucrative or behind the scenes as drug dealing; if they elected to actually get out there and start doing crime, I'd guess they would find out that low-level criminals who steal cars and rob banks spend alot of time in Prisons as they are caught alot.
Drugs will allways be available to anyone who wants them, anywhere. This concept holds water as the track record is clear, it will go on and on. Since we can't control it, legalize and tax it; that's the control that will put drug dealers out of business for good; since the drugs are always going to be there; we at least get rid of one of the tewo evils and gain a HIGH TAX. (55%) which is still cheap as Johnson-Johnson can crank out a pure Kilo for 1/10th the cost of the Cartels and it will be pure with eve dosages available....sound funny? It's the max control you'll ever get.

People most often, when hearing the term "illegal drugs" mentioned, think only about marijuana!
The research conducted by LEGITIMATE authorities on medical, legal, and social issues of drugs seem to disagree with advocates for legalization of marijuana and other drugs listed under the Controlled Substances Act which is comprised of laws from the US and International Treaties with a majority of other countries.
One has to consider that if the illegal drugs are legalized, the potential for misuse, abuse, and addiction will rise at an alarming rate. The social costs alone for addiction would be horrendous.
You will always have pro and con concerning this topic but I will always stand by those who are "experts" and not those who've been told by their "best friend" that this or that doesn't cause harm.
Looking for a better "high" than marijuana will only lead to the use of more complicated and dangerous drugs.
Prohibition on alcohol did not deter illegal alcohol consumption and the police were employed. Legalizing alcohol occurred and the police are still in business.
Everyday I go to work, I see the results of illegal drug use and the torn families and neighbors associated with those who lie, steal, cheat, harm, and kill others over their next "fix." Legalize the drugs and you will still have those who use all their own money to get all they can and STILL resort to stealing lying, cheating, harming, and killing others to get MORE money to purchase the legalized drugs. Make the government provide the drugs??? Not on my tax dollars!! I already pay enough!
Just a view from "the other side."
Best wishes!

...and think of all the DEA agents with no jobs. Maybe they could be put to work as tax collectors and collect taxes on the now-legal drugs.
You're logic applies to other crimes, too. If we made alcohol illegal, would liquor store operators start robbing banks?

You got the same initials as me. As far as the drugs go, weed is soo far over-rated as being a crime, and most policemen know this. As far as herion cocaine and lsd, along with other drugs catorgorzid with the ones mentioned, then I disagree with makeing it legal.
