I have both silver and gold jewelry. I love the silver but can tell you, in no uncertain terms, that it is not a strong metal that stands the test of time when worn day in and day out year after year after year. Sterling is not a very hard metal and the prongs can easily bend, causing the stone to possibly dislodge and get lost. Also, the band itself will not retain it's shape and will bend easily. I know this from personal experience. A ring worn daily should be made out of a harder metal, such as gold or platinum so it will stand the test of time. There really is no traditional color of metal. However, trends come and go. Right now you can find thousands of rings in white gold or platinum. Yellow gold seems not to be so popular these days, but this changes with time and trends, not traditions. I say, buy what you love and be happy with that.

Depends on the girl and how much money you want to spend. I am not very careful with my jewelry, so I like harder metals. Platinum will last the longest, but also the most expensive. If you go with gold, go with a lower karat (also meaning lower quality) and it'll last longer.

I'm not a fan of white gold because you have to always get it rhodium plated or it'll turn yellow with time. If she wants white, go for the platinum.

The problem with yellow and red gold with diamonds is that if the diamond is not good quality, it will really show up. The better the clarity, the easier it is to use a non white metal. If you're going to skimp on clarity, stick with a a white metal to help it sparkle more.

It's really up to what the girl like. Myself I hate gold . . . platinum is a great thing to have, their really really strong. I think diamonds look way better on the white gold or platinum rings. If you're doing white gold, this is very very important! BE SURE THEIR NOT PLATED!! This means that they take a gold ring, and dip them in a white gold "mix" per-say and they plate it, eventually with different kinds of hard water, chemicals, or just regular wear, the plating will start to rub off and you will be able to see the regular gold. Keep that in mind.

Take note of the fact that the women who are answering your question are going straight to the most expensive metal and saying yellow gold, which is traditional and has the most contrast to really show off a diamond, comes in dead last. Don't spend the extra on white gold or platinum unless your fiancee sees a ring she really likes in white gold or platinum -- then get that one if you can afford it.

The diamond looks best against platinum, its the brightest metal. White gold has a hue of yellow to it.The diamond looks a little less bright against it.

It depends on what the girl likes. It is an individual choice. Platinum is the highest quality metal of the three. Which metal you choose will have no effect whatsoever on the diamond itself. Remember the 4 c's when diamond shopping: color, clarity, carats, and cut. Ask your jeweler for assistance when choosing the perfect diamond. Good luck !

Platinum is more expensive scratches easier & loses it polish quicker. Really if you are considering this what matters the most is the ring you like & price. The variety of wedding ring set is so varied the best thing to go look & ask your local jeweler.

nowadays wedding rings are white gold and platinum, not much yellow gold anymore. platinum is the best, but you can get a yellow or white gold ring and then get it dipped.

platinum most expensive but definitely my favorite, gold traditional, white gold i think she would have to tell you. its all personal preference ask her friends or her mom and you could take a look at what she already has and for the rock well there are certificates that come with them to guarantee clarity and flaws get a good jeweler and have them break it down for you.

If you really want a great looking wedding band, try the cigar ring of a Cohiba. If it is a true Cuban cigar it will have a pretty yellow gold color with a contrasting mix of black letters. I would go with a 50 or 52 ring size for my special lady as it is a little larger and more comfortable to wear.
