Gay male: Brokeback Mountain, because it's a great tragic romance even if you remove the gay element. These are two very specific characters, but they also represent two archetypes and two basic human personality traits that are always in conflict and need to be kept in harmony. Ennis is repressed, controlling, plays it safe to such a degree that he's never able to fully enjoy life. He's so afraid of losing what he has that he never risks getting what he wants. Jack is just short of openly gay, is careless, constantly seeking pleasure and instant gratification, is impulsive to the point of carelessness. Their relationship works both as a star-crossed lovers story and as an exploration of self-control vs. openness, which is out of balance within these characters to the point that they both end up being destroyed.

Lesbian: Saving Face is a delightful formula romance that is nonetheless very well made and placed within a specific set of plausible circumstances.

Transgender: Ma Vei en Rose, a french movie about a transgendered five year old and the difficulties this causes her and her family. Soldier's Girl and Different For Girls honorable mentions.

'For A Lost Soldier'
I could watch that movie over and over and over again!
I think I like it so much because it is about something I longed so much for in my own life as a child. Most people can't understand it and think it is bad, evil, nasty, perverted but there really are boys out there that want that kind of a relationship with a man! I did but just didn't know how to go about finding it! So I can relate so well to the story in the movie - it touches my heart. Everybody has their own idea of what is ok and what is not ok and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. I am not condoning sexual child abuse at all I hate that, I hate when it happens but there are those out there that truly do want that kind of relationship as seen in this movie and as I am telling you I did! Take it for what it is worth! *hugs* JAC<

I mostly love Big Eden. And it's a guilty pleasure, but I really love "Girls will be Girls"-- but it is a 'tad' misogynist.
