It makes you poop because as it absorbs water in your intestines it stimulates peristalsis to occur better by expanding in your intestines and collecting all the poop. (Peristasis = The wave like muscular contractions of your alimentary canal.)

Dietary fibers are the indigestible portion of plant foods that move food through the digestive system, absorbing water. Chemically, dietary fiber consists of non-starch polysaccharides and several other plant components such as cellulose, lignin, waxes, chitins, pectins etc.,

Soluble and insoluble fibers
Insoluble fiber possesses passive water-attracting properties that help to increase bulk, soften stool and shorten transit time through the intestinal tract. Soluble fiber undergoes active metabolic processing via fermentation, yielding end-products with broad, significant health effects.

Consider a plum (or prune), with thick skin covering a juicy pulp. The plum skin is an example of an insoluble fiber source, whereas soluble fiber sources are inside the pulp. Other sources of insoluble fiber include whole wheat, wheat and corn bran, flax seed lignans and vegetables such as carrots, celery, green beans and potato skins.

Um..because fiber is solid, and it is not one of the nutrients that the villi in your small intestine take to your bloodstream. Fiber is part of what is left after nutrients are sucked out of food, and what it left turns into waste, or poop as you say.

because fiber cannot be broken down by your digestive system. since it cannot be broken down into anything useful (ie energy needed by your body to function) it keeps on flowing right out!

It's a bulk-forming laxative that doesn't get completely digested, so it ends up cleaning all the $h!t out.
