Arthur Miller used The Crucible to display his displeasure with the Mc Carthy hearings and how he feared a society in which one citizen can accuse another citizen with very little to substantiate their claim. Hollywood actors, writers, directors, etc. were very hurt by being blacklisted as communists and The Crucible was Miller's way of responding.

Arthur Miller wrote for the working man. He tried to send the political message that the American Dream is not what is supposed to be, in that the idea of it has gone awry.
