My 4 month old son is constipated. He currently is on solids. His ped said not to give him juice yet since she believes its carbs he doesnt need yet, but I think the solids are stopping him up. He drinks about 2 ozs of water a day. Formula he has 8ozs every 4 hours for 4 feedings. Any advice?

His Ped said the water was better for him...at this time juice would just fatten him up.

Lay off the water. Try juice and less of the cereal. More fruits and veggies. The fiber helps them go. Prune juice, apple juice are the best

I have this same problem with my twins who are also four months old! My pediatrician said No to most juices as well because it is an irritant for their little bellies..but she said no the the water because it provided NO nutrition whatsover. She said add 2 teaspoons prune juice to regular bottles...that is not enough to fatten him up so dont worry about it. You can do it every bottle if you want to. I did it 3 times a day till it started loosening the bowels movements and now i continue except i only give it once a day. It doesnt upset their bellies..but the spit up afterwards can be pretty gross looking! Trust me i gave them pear and apple juice before because a friend of mine said so...but they had a horrible belly ache! The prune juice works great!

Give him some prunes(babyfood) or raisins. You could try a little bit of apple juice, even though your ped says no juice. I did that for my son when he was six months or so and it helped. Fruits and veggies should help.

well, if he is on solids - get a jar of prunes. Nasty i know, and he may not like it at all. But it shouldnt take too much. Your doctor has told you no juice, but this isn't necessarily to put him on it continuously. A few ounces of prune juice is not going to make him chubby. I have had 3 boys myself, they are now 9, 6, & 3. My mom also swore by adding like a tsp of honey to his formula. Good luck!

This is the absolute easiest way to make him go within a few minutes. Give him a bottle of warm water, about 4 oz, and add a teaspoon of corn syrup. It is basically sugar and it works as a laxative. I have done it a few times with 2 of my children, it was never long before they were better. They always went within a few minutes.

Okay so these are the two things that worked the best for my baby: A little bit of diluted prune juice and (this is gross) lay him down like you're changing his diaper and stick the tip of a q-tip in his butt a little bit. I don't know why, but this makes him go poop when he can't do it himself. If you don't want to give prune juice, try a little bit of baby food, like apricots, mixed into his formula...that also works.

More water, lots more water.

For a growing child 2 Oz's it not enough.

If the formula has IRON in it, that too is a casual agent in constipation. More water.

You can call peds, increase water intake, prune juice, and a pediatric suppository.
